Before you do or act you think ... And if you think that you do not think before you act, you have already thought (because the specific issue resembles a similar situation that is good enough to act in the same way).
We all use principles. They guide our daily activities, they pilot us the way we act and do things. They provide a point of view on (world) issues and hopefully we act accordingly. This attitude towards things is not fixed but can be changed when you encounter new information or knowledge on issues you have taken a stand on. And some people are more fundamental about their viewpoints than others, but without principles you can not live, just because of the overwhelming amount of information you need to order and the decisions you need to take.
We are raised with principles and we shape them while we grow up. Some continue to be useful, others need thorough maintenance and yet others should be rendered harmless.
For example: “don’t talk to strangers,” is what we learn when we are young. But this seems hardly productive when we grow up.
Principles are efficient (on one hand) but they are also the cause to act “wrong.”
Principles are efficient because you do not have to think every time you that you are dealing with slightly similar issues. If you apply this to the – “don’t talk to strangers,” you avoid every contact with people you do not know. So if someone on the street asks you the way to the theatre you respond – “I’m sorry...” very efficient. A Similar principle is not to buy new and innovative products. This is also efficient, because these product often come with growing pains you have to pay before you can really enjoy the product. Yet the other side is that if you stick to this principle and there is a really new product evolving fast into a professional tool where you are observing the development and miss the train.
It is the art to be well prepared in life and principles may help you there. But you also need to be conscious about this way you think ... and therefore act.
