A typical college student, my digital camera is one of my favorite gadgets my hard-earned money has bought (right up there with my iPod and cell phone). I take it everywhere I go, snapping away at anyone (and anything) I possibly can. My hard drive is filled to the brim with tender memories, chance meetings, and embarrassing moments.
All computers can be susceptible to failure for a variety of reasons. Not being very technologically adept, all my pictures could be gone in a flash with a just few mouse-clicks, or if my hard drive were to crash (whether or not by my own doing). Although these situations cannot be predicted, they can certainly be planned for. So what is the best solution preserving your priceless documents?
If my music CDs are any indication of how my photo CDs may end up, that is probably not the most pragmatic option. Not to mention, most CDs can scratch easily and some recordable CDs can even deteriorate within only a few short years. Print copies are always an option but while they are aesthetically pleasing, they can be just as prone to damage if not stored or taken care of properly.
Having done my homework, I learned about remote online backup: services that will automatically backup any apps on any PC enable with a broadband connection.
What are the advantages to remote online backup? How about time for starters? Who wants to spend hours every month backing up photos to a CD or second hard drive? Download the service once, pick the files you want to backup, and forget about it…it does the rest all in the background while your computer is not being used (in sleep or stand-by mode). It also saves money. External drives can be expensive and they are not water, theft, or fire-proof; if a mishap or catastrophe were to happen, you could still end up losing all your files. Most online backup companies provide the service for a small monthly fee and some even provide free trial periods for you to test them out.
Personally, I find remote online backup is the most secure, economical, and convenient way to ensure the protection of all my photographs.
